Chairs and Professorships

One of the goals of Wisconsin Medicine is to recruit and retain the best and brightest minds in medicine. The remarkable faculty and staff members at UW Health and the UW School of Medicine and Public Health are discovering new treatments and cures for the world’s most challenging health issues, through research acceleration and innovation. These exceptional health care leaders are our best clinicians, delivering extraordinary patient-centered care, and our top professors, providing word-class medical education to the next generation of health care providers.

Through philanthropic investment, leaders at UW Health and the UW School of Medicine and Public Health can recruit and retain national trailblazers who are leading the way to better outcomes for patients and families. By creating a chair or professorship through Wisconsin Medicine, you, as a philanthropic partner, are playing a crucial role in sustaining our strong stature in the highly competitive environment of academic medicine.

It’s a prestigious honor for a faculty member to receive an award for a named chair or professorship, as it provides sustainable resources for programmatic expansion, the procurement of state-of-the-art technology, and the flexibility to advance research expertise. These impactful gifts inspire other philanthropists to invest in our programs and help bring the best minds together thanks to Wisconsin Medicine.

The financial commitment for establishing a chair or professorship through Wisconsin Medicine may be structured using a variety of vehicles, including an annual gift, an endowment, or a planned gift. Chair and professorship appointments are awarded in five-year terms by the UW–Madison provost, following a recommendation by the dean of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.
